Thanks to the proprietary BDI RetroFit technology and Renewable Energy Group’s proprietary processing capabilities the plants will now be able to produce a biodiesel from some of the lowest carbon intensity, hardest to convert waste fats and oils.
Making biodiesel from waste oils and fats instead of fresh oil improves the environmental balance of the biofuel. The upgrade will make the two plants, in Emden and Oeding, fit for several more years of operation making renewable energy out of waste. The project unites BDI, a world market leader in this process technology, with REG, one of the largest biodiesel producers in North America, and one of the most important biodiesel firms globally.
If building and modernizing biodiesel production plants was an Olympic discipline, BDI-BioEnergy International GmbH would have a few gold medals by now. The Renewable Energy Group (REG) seems to think the same way: The American biodiesel concern, with its headquarters in Ames, Iowa, through its affiliate REG Biofuels Germany GmbH has given BDI a contract to modernize two biodiesel production plants in Emden and Oeding in Germany. That is what they want the innovative BDI technology for. It’s about taking responsibility for the environment, making energy supplies more independent and converting waste materials into clean energy. The entire plant capacity of 200,000 metric tons per year will be converted to waste-based oils as a result of this modernization.
This results in a corresponding CO2 savings: the pollution reduction relates to approximately 300,000 diesel cars that can be operated in a CO2-neutral way – an enormously important contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
Technology and practical know-how = new level
In Emden and Oeding, BDI-BioEnergy International GmbH will upgrade the production plants to a completely new technical level by installing their own RetroFit technology.
“With our innovative RetroFit programme, we are taking the two biodiesel plants to a completely new technical and economic level. The result is unique raw material flexibility, maximum plant availability and a measurably valuable contribution to the circular economy and CO2 reduction.” says Markus Dielacher, CEO BDI-BioEnergy International GmbH.
BDI-BioEnergy International: the number 1 in biodiesel production plants
BDI have been impressing customers with their development competence since 1996 – inventions of their own as well as their implementations of the newest technologies for resource-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies. Their solutions have made it possible to generate renewable energy out of waste materials. BDI-BioEnergy International GmbH built the first industrial plants in the world that were able to convert used cooking oil and waste animal fats into high-quality biodiesel. The company’s process engineering competence and practical know-how are unequalled and have made BDI a world market leader in engineering of biodiesel production plants.
